UE set to recognize independent Kosovo

January 15, 2008

The European Union is set to recognize the independence of Kosovo in March, the portuguese newspaper, Diário de Notícias, has published today.

The Union will accept the declaration of independence of the Serbian province providing there has international support, at least from the United States, but the Slovakian Presidency refuses to confirm the plan will move on in March.

But, according to the Portuguese newspaper, Brussels has everything scheduled.

In February the international police mission will move to the territory. The independence of Pristine will be recognized during a meeting of the Union to be held in Slovakia by the end of March.

The success of the plan is only dependent on Serbia and Russia’s reactions and the presidential elections in country, in the beginning of February, may create a major problem.

If the ultra nationalist candidate, Tomislav Nikolic, wins the ellections to the actual president, Boris Tadic, Serbia will go out of the control of the Europeans and may react with violence to a unilateral declaration of the province.

Mr Nicolic would rather see Serbia to give hands to Russia, the greatest power opposing the independence of Kosovo, than to join the European club.

The Union is rushing to make Serbia to sign an agreement of association in January, which would compromise the coming president, whoever he is, for the future.

The agreement is also expected to bring the countries in the region nearer to the European Union.
